What summer swim class should I
put my child in? |
|
The
YMCA has been called "America's
Favorite Swim Instructor" for
over 100 years. At the Y, not
only will your child learn how
to swim, he/she will learn about
his/her self, about safety and
rescue skills, and about water
activities you can enjoy for a
lifetime. Throughout all levels,
students are taught personal
stroke development and safety
skills. Also we value and
incorporate water sports & games
and personal growth to each
class. Class size is determined
by both safety factors and age
of participants and is closely
monitored to ensure safety. All
our instructors provide caring,
personal instruction and all are
YMCA Swim Instructor certified.
Please read the following
descriptions to assist with
registration. If you are unsure
of what class to register your
son or daughter contact Matt
Markey 989-753-7721 ext. 215, or
stop at our Member Service desk
for detailed help. |
SKIPPERS
Parent/Child (6 - 36 months)
This
30-minute class is for children
ages 6 to 36 months and their
parents. The primary objective
is water adjustment for the
child. The parents will be
taught how to work with their
child and how to keep their
child safe in and around the
water. Activities are based on
the developmental abilities of
the child.
Pre-School Swimming (3- 5 Years)
This class is designed for
younger children and
incorporates water adjustment as
well as teaching the basics of
swimming, including paddling and
kicking. Your child will
progress at his or her own pace
based on physical ability and
the development of hand-eye
coordination. The instructors
teach the children how to swim
on their front and back without
the use of a flotation device as
well as building their
confidence and endurance in the
water. |
 |
Pike/Eel (beginner to advanced
beginner) Max 6 students per
class
This class is for children with
little or no previous
experience. Children will become
comfortable in the water and
begin to swim independently. At
the end of these levels a
student will be able to float on
the front and back, and swim
across our shallow pool without
assistance.
Ray/Starfish (intermediate to
advanced) Max 6 students per
class
Children review previously
learned skills, improve stroke
skills, build endurance, learn
to tread water and perform basic
diving skills. They are
introduced to the breaststroke
and the sidestroke as well as
swim under water and dive. At
the end of these levels a
student will be able to swim a
length of our deep pool on their
front and back. |

Youth
Progressive Swimming Program
(6-14 Years)
The progressive lessons are
designed for older children and
teach the basic strokes as well
as proper form and breathing
techniques. Its allows the
beginner the chance to discover
how to move effectively in the
water and encourages the more
advanced swimmers to gain
endurance. They will learn all
of the basic strokes while
having fun in the water. |

children who are comfortable in the water and can swim independently 5

elementary back, breaststroke, and sidestroke. Basic diving is taught at
this level. To pass they must master all skills.
- Fish/Flying Fish/Shark (Advanced

all strokes previously learned with turns and increase endurance. They
are introduced to the butterfly stroke. Students are also introduced to
advanced swim strokes necessary for lifesaving skills. Also, advanced

We
offer 3 different 4-week
sessions during the summer.
Children learn best in a
"child-centered", fun-filled
environment. This approach
offers more active involvement
from each child and a better
fundamental understanding of
swimming - allowing each child
to learn more and have more fun.
Children learn through play,
hands-on experiences, having fun
and creative repetition.
Children are taught in small
groups with others of their own
age and skill level. Each child
will be assessed to assure they
are in the correct class. Simply
choose the session and time that
best fits your family schedule.
Because of the natural
succession of our swim lessons
program, no make-up classes
are available. |
